The Deere strike is over, food and agtech inventions make 2021 TIME 100 Best list (congrats SAVRpak), and Starbucks tests alt milk. A big partnership between a large software company and another large crop science company, a solar garden in Colorado and could venture debt be a financing option in agtech? The theme of the agtech week reveals, in my opinion, the key facet of the Bayer Crop Science/Microsoft partnership and illustrates a mindset shift required to address food and agriculture issues—open innovation. You have to be excited about that and this week’s agtech news!

Agtech Theme of the Week: Open Innovation

The big news of the agtech week was the announced partnership between Bayer Crop Science and Microsoft. This partnership is aimed at developing agriculture-focused tech tools. The importance of this partnership is not what they are planning to do, but the organizations that are doing it—a large international technology provider and an international crop science conglomerate.

Every week, the news highlights the continued issues in food and agriculture—from food access, technology adoption, rural connectivity, among others—and this partnership recognizes that those solutions may come from outside of traditional food and agriculture stakeholders. The concept of open innovation, that innovation comes from anywhere and anyone, is what prompted this partnership. Being open to the largest technology provider, outside of agriculture, developing technology solutions specific to agriculture is the type of mindset the food and agtech ecosystem needs to adopt to accelerate innovation. Perhaps the next wave of innovations for food and agriculture will come from outside traditional ag ecosystem, from ancillary industries like mining, materials, and petrochemicals, or verticals like telecomms, aerospace/defense, and supply chain/logistics. Open innovation is not only an objective, but a mindset. I am excited to see where this Bayer/Microsoft partnership goes and for other partnerships like these to be announced!

Stay safe, warm and have a wonderful Thanksgiving week.
